Databases & Off-Campus Access
The databases below contain full-text articles in magazines, journals, newspapers and other resources that are invaluable to your research. Although you access databases online, they are not “Internet sites” but licensed subscriptions made available to students, faculty, and staff of VVC. For access off-campus, users must apply for a new User Name and Password each semester.
Note: Once you receive a password, use the "Off-Campus Access" button below to connect to databases from home.

EBSCO Host MasterFile Premier
MasterFile Premier is a multi-disciplinary database providing full-text articles for nearly 1,700 general interest periodicals/magazines dating as far back as 1975. Also contains full-text for nearly 500 reference books and over 164,400 primary source documents.

Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center
Opposing Viewpoints In Context provides a complete one-stop resource for information on social issues. Access controversial viewpoint articles, topic overviews, statistics, primary documents, links to Web sites, and full-text magazine and newspaper articles. CQ Researcher database
CQ Researcher is a weekly online publication that covers current and controversial issues. Complete summaries, discussion covering all sides of the issue, and annotated bibliographies are provided for each topic. Users are able to view the current issue, search past issues, or browse by topic, pro/con, and date. (Tip: Click the “Browse Reports” tab at the top of the homepage for a list of popular topics and pro/con issues.)
NewsBank Access World News
NewsBank Access World News contains full-text articles from over 1,700 U.S. and international information sources, mostly newspapers and wire services. Chronological coverage varies among sources but many titles extend back to the 1990's. Use this link Special Reports to access NewsBank's special reports on topics of current interest (e.g. Women's History, Terrorism, World Environment, etc.)
EBSCO Host Newspaper Source Plus
Newspaper Source Plus includes more than 860 full-text newspapers (including the New York Times), providing more than 35 million full-text articles. In addition, the database features more than 857,000 television and radio news transcripts from CBS News, CNN, CNN International, NPR, etc.

Oxford Art Index
Oxford Art Online is a gateway offering users the ability to access and cross-search four major art reference resources in one location: Grove Art Online, Oxford Companion to Western Art, The Concise Dictionary of Art Terms, and Oxford’s Encyclopedia of Aesthetics. The combined content includes over 23,000 subject entries, 21,000 biographies, and links to more than 40,000 images on every aspect of the visual arts from prehistory to present. World art timelines and thematic topic guides are also provided.
Oxford Music Index
Oxford Music Online is a gateway offering users the ability to access and cross-search four major music reference resources in one location: Grove Music Online, The Oxford Companion to Music, The Oxford Dictionary of Music, 2nd edition, and The Encyclopedia of Popular Music, 4th edition. The Oxford Companion to Music offers more than 8,000 articles on composers, performers, conductors, instruments, forms and genres. The Encyclopedia of Popular Music is the authoritative biographical encyclopedia of rock, pop, and jazz artists from 1900 to the present. The database also provides music history timelines and thematic topic guides.
EBSCO Host BIR Entertainment
BIR Entertainment provides information on about 450,000 music titles and 200,000 DVD/video titles, with more being added regularly. With BIR, your patrons can find music or videos featuring a favorite artist or performer, or a specific genre.
Book In Print Database
Books in Print provides access to approximately 2 million titles that are in print, forthcoming, or declared out-of-print. Records are searchable by author, title, subject, publisher, ISBN, and keywords, as well as other criteria. The database also includes publisher's information and full-text Book Reviews from twelve leading publications.
EBSCO Host Book Index with Reviews
Book Index with Reviews is a comprehensive database providing information on over 5 million book titles, in a wide range of formats. The database contains almost 800,000 full-text searchable book reviews from sources such as Library Journal, School Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, Booklist and others. BIR also contains close to 700,000 music, DVD, and video titles, making it a great resource for finding multimedia materials.

EBSCO Host Business Source Elite
Business Source Elite provides full-text coverage for nearly 1,000 business publications including scholarly journals and company profiles. Topics cover accounting, banking, international business, management, etc.
EBSCO Host Regional Business News
Regional Business News includes full-text coverage for nearly 100 regional U.S. and Canadian business publications.

EBSCO Host E-Books
EBSCOhost eBooks provides access to approximately 2,300 eBook titles purchased through the California Community College Library Consortium. The titles were hand-selected to support a wide range of subjects and are searchable in the library catalog or directly through the EBSCOhost database. In addition to the purchased titles, the database also provides access to over 3,400 public domain eBooks from sources such as Project Gutenberg (ex., Works of Shakespeare, Canterbury Tales, The Bible...). Note: Viewing individual eBook titles is limited to one person at a time and thus may not always be accessible. Once a title is returned, there is a 15 minute release period before it can be accessed by the same or another user.

ERIC (Education Resource Information Center) is a massive educational resource containing over 1.4 million records and links to more than 337,000 full-text documents. (Accessed through EBSCO Host)
EBSCO Host Professional Development Collection
Professional Development Collection is designed for professional educators, providing a highly specialized collection of nearly 520 high quality education journals, including more than 350 peer-reviewed titles. This database also contains more than 200 educational reports.
EBSCO Host MAS Ultra - School Edition
MAS Ultra - School Edition is designed specifically for high school libraries but it may be useful for college students taking education classes focusing on secondary grade levels. The database contains full-text for nearly 500 popular magazines geared toward high school students. Also included are more than 360 full-text reference books, 85,670 biographies, over 107,000 primary source documents.
EBSCO Host Primary Search
Primary Search is designed specifically for elementary school students but may be useful for college students taking education classes focusing on elementary grade levels. The database provides full-text for more than 70 popular magazines suitable for elementary school students. All full-text articles are assigned a reading level indicator (Lexiles) and date back as far as 1990.

Access United Nations
Britannica Online-Academic contains the complete encyclopedia as well as the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary and Thesaurus. Content is updated daily and includes topical entries, maps, photos, illustrations, magazine and journal articles, videos, multimedia clips, and yearbooks. Two useful features are “Research Tools” (Country Comparisons, Subject Timelines, This Day in History...) and “Spotlights” (in-depth coverage of popular topics including Notable Women, Black History, and Shakespeare).
EBSCO Host Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia
Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia provides over 25,000 encyclopedic entries covering a variety of subject areas. (Accessed through EBSCO Host).

Access United Nations
Access UN (United Nations) contains full-text UN documents, publications, and more. Separate indexing is provided for the UN Treaty Series and six main UN bodies: General Assembly, Security Council, Economics and Social Council, Trusteeship Council, and the Secretariat and International Court of Justice. Coverage is from 1998 to present.
CQ Weekly
CQ Weekly online provides information on government, politics, and public policy surrounding Congress. Each issue contains an unbiased, objective summary of all Capitol Hill activity from the previous week. Useful search features include browsing by topic and article date.

EBSCO Host Military & Government Collection
Military & Government Collection offers a collection of periodicals, academic journals, and other content pertinent to all branches of the military and government. The collection includes full-text for nearly 300 journals and periodicals and indexing and abstracts for nearly 400 titles.

Health & Wellness Resource Center
Health & Wellness Resource Center is a comprehensive consumer health resource that provides authoritative information on a full range of health-related issues. It contains information from more than 1,000 top medical journals and periodicals, as well as articles from more than 2,200 general-interest publications. The database also contains the complete text of numerous reference sources including The Gale Encyclopedia of Alternative Medicine and The Gale Encyclopedia of Genetic Disorders.
EBSCO Host Health Source: Nursing Academic Edition
Health Source: Nursing Academic Edition provides nearly 550 scholarly full-text journals focusing on many medical disciplines. Also includes the Lexi-PAL Drug Guide, which covers 1,300 generic drug patient education sheets with more than 4,700 brand names
EBSCO Host Health Source: Consumer Edition
Consumer Health Complete provides content covering all areas of health and wellness from mainstream medicine to the many perspectives of complementary, holistic and integrated medicines. Includes access to over 550 health related magazines and journals, more than 250 health related books and encyclopedias, thousands of full-text evidence-based reports, the Clinical Reference System, the Lexi-PAL Drug Guide, and more.
EBSCO Host Consumer Health Complete
Health Source: Consumer Edition provides information on many health topics including the medical sciences, food sciences and nutrition, childcare, sports medicine and general health. Includes access to over 80 full-text consumer health magazines (American Fitness, Better Nutrition, Prevention, etc.), nearly 130 health reference books, and over 9,000 clinical reference reports.
MEDLINE provides authoritative medical information on medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, pre-clinical sciences, and much more. Created by the National Library of Medicine, the database searches citations from over 4,800 current biomedical journals. (Accessed through EBSCO Host)

America: History and Life covers the history and culture of the United States and Canada, from prehistory to the present. The database includes selective indexing for 1,700 journals from 1955 to present, and full-text coverage of more than 200 journals and nearly 100 books..
EBSCO Host European Views of the Americas: 1493 to 1750
European Views of the Americas: 1493 to 1750 is a resource created from “European Americana: A Chronological Guide to Works Printed In Europe Relating to The Americas, 1493-1750,” the authoritative bibliography that is well-known and respected by scholars worldwide. The database was produced in cooperation with the John Carter Brown Library, and contains more than 32,000 entries from printed records about the Americas written in Europe before 1750.

Literature Resource Center (Gale) contains the complete Gale series, Contemporary Authors and Dictionary of Literary Biography, "selected" full-text critical essays from various Gale literary criticism series (Contemporary, 1400-1800, 19th –Century, 20th-Century, Shakespearean, Poetry, Drama, Short-Story, Children’s Literature), critical essays and reviews from over 360 literary journals and magazines, and more.

Gale Literary Database is a cross-searchable database, providing full-text access to three core Gale literary series: Contemporary Authors, Contemporary Literary Criticism Select, and the Dictionary of Literary Biography. The database provides complete biographical and bibliographical information on more than 120,000 U.S. and international authors, over 11,000 critical essays, and nearly 10,000 biographical and critical essays on literary figures from all eras and genres.

Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection is a comprehensive resource covering topics in emotional and behavioral characteristics, psychiatry & psychology, mental processes, anthropology, and observational & experimental methods. The database offers full-text coverage for nearly 400 academic journals.

Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy
Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy (REP) is the online version of the REP originally published in 1998 (located in the library). Like the print edition, the online version features over 2,000 original articles across the discipline of philosophy. REP is updated quarterly and contains numerous links between articles and to other philosophy resources.

GreenFILE is a collection of scholarly, government and general-interest titles that includes content on global warming, green building, pollution, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, recycling, and more. The database provides indexing and abstracts for more than 384,000 records, 4,700 full-text.
Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems
Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS) (On-campus only) is an interdisciplinary compendium of twenty full-text encyclopedias searchable by keyword or subject categories.
